English Learners (EL)

SHELTERED EL ENGLISH 9

Grade: 9
Prerequisite: EL levels 1-2 OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course provides EL students in levels 1-2 their English 9 credit. Through differentiated unit activities, students will read and react to novels, short stories, poetry, drama and non-fiction. It also includes a large emphasis on public speaking, looking at speech structure and organization, as well as delivery skills. 


SHELTERED EL ENGLISH 9/10

Grade: 9, 10
Prerequisite: EL levels 1-2 OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course provides EL students in levels 1-2 English 9 and English 10 credits.  Through differentiated unit activities, students will read and react to classic and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction (novels, short stories, poetry, and drama).  It also includes a large emphasis on public speaking, looking at speech structure and organization, as well as delivery skills to improve students’ overall communication skills.  In addition, the research process and critical analysis will be taught through argumentative and analytical essays.


SHELTERED EL ENGLISH 11/12

Grade: 11,12
Prerequisite: EL levels 1-2 OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course provides EL students in levels 1-2 English 11 and English 12 credits.  Through differentiated unit activities, students will move from doing close reading of texts to analyzing how texts work.  Literature studied includes fiction and non-fiction prose, poetry, plays and visual texts like film.  To demonstrate learning, students individually and in groups will write essays, give presentations, create original work and analyze literature to improve communication skills.  In addition students will develop their skills in persuasive, analytical and research writing activities to improve students’ overall communication skills.


EL Language Academy 9-12

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL levels 1-2-3 OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for advanced and transitional ELs. Students in this course will use selected literature as a means of improving proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Course objectives emphasize increasing academic vocabulary, improving communication skills and increasing the understanding of English grammar patterns. This course is aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced and transitional levels as well as the Minnesota/Eastern Carver County Schools English 9-12.


EL Academic Support - Biology 

Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for advanced English Learners. Students in this course will build academic language and access Science content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels and with Minnesota Biology standards as determined by the science department.


EL Academic Support - Chemistry          

Grade: 10, 11
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed to help advanced English Learners students currently enrolled in Chemistry. Students in this course will build academic language and access Science content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels and with Minnesota Chemistry standards as determined by the science department.


EL Academic Support - Physics   

Grade: 9, 10, 10, 11
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for advanced English Learners. Students in this course will build academic language and access Science content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels and with Minnesota Physics standards as determined by the science department.


 

EL Academic Support - Economics     

Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 1 Semester

Students in this course will build academic language and access Economics’ content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels and with Minnesota Economics’ standards as determined by the Social Studies’ department.


EL Academic Support - US Government

Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 1 Semester

Students in this course will build academic language and access U.S. Government content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels and with Minnesota U.S. Government standards as determined by the Social Studies’ department.


EL English Studio 1201 (CIS – College in the Schools)     

Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Either EL 4 proficiency OR exited, AND passed the state reading and writing exams OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for students who are at the transitional and reaching levels of English language acquisition. This course will prepare students for post-secondary options and will refine English /communicative/organizational skills as well as academic language needed for success beyond high school. Preference will be given to twelfth graders. The first semester concentrates on bridging the gap between high school and college readiness skills. Then the second semester of this course gives students the opportunity to earn 4  University of Minnesota English elective credits. Meets requirement for English 11 or English 12.


EL 1-2 English of today   

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for beginning ELs who have little or no experience with the English language. This course is aligned with ACTFL World Language standards and Minnesota EL standards. Students in this course will use selected literature as a means of improving proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Focus will be on linguistic characteristics, spoken academic language and cultural aspects of English.


EL 1-2 English Through Content        

Grade: 9, 10, 11
Prerequisite: EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for beginner and intermediate English Learners. Students in this course will develop language skills through content vocabulary in the areas of math, social studies, science, health and technology. Course objectives will follow modified content curriculum and Minnesota EL standards at the beginner and intermediate levels.


EL World History

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL 3 proficiency OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for advanced English Learners. Students in this course will build academic language and access Social Studies content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Minnesota Social Studies (World History) standards and Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels. This course is offered every other year.


EL United States History    

Grade: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: EL 3 proficiency OR EL Teacher recommendation
Length: 2 Semesters

This course is designed for advanced English Learners. Students in this course will build academic language and access Social Studies content and standards through language support. Specific course offering will follow the needs of the largest student base. Course objectives will be aligned with Eastern Carver County Schools’ Social Studies (United States History) standards and Minnesota EL standards at the advanced levels. This course is offered every other year.
